Defence Headquarters debunks viral video, warns against misinformation

Defence Headquarters Refutes Misleading Video of Chief of Defence Staff

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed a misleading video circulating on social media that inaccurately portrays Chief of Defence Staff General OO Oluyede.

In a statement on June 9, 2026, Major General Samalia Uba, the Director of Defence Information, characterized the video as fabricated and deceptive, asserting that it does not reflect any official communication or engagement involving senior military officials.

The DHQ stated that the video’s purpose appears to be to mislead the public and create confusion regarding the operations and leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The military emphasized that the public should disregard the video, clarifying that it did not originate from any official military source or authorized communication channel.

“Initial evaluations by the military indicate that the video exhibits clear signs of digital manipulation and was likely produced using artificial intelligence technology to create a false narrative,” the statement read.

The DHQ expressed concern over the increasing misuse of digital technologies and social media platforms to fabricate content involving senior military officials. They cautioned that such actions could undermine public trust and pose a risk to national security.

Additionally, the military cautioned social media influencers, bloggers, and content creators against sharing or amplifying unverified military-related information for increased online engagement.

Reiterating its commitment to national security, the Armed Forces of Nigeria urged media professionals and the public to verify information through official Defence Headquarters channels. They assured citizens of their ongoing dedication to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty, peace, and security.
