Don’t use our farmland to build housing estate – Abia community women beg Gov Otti

Umuariaga Women Claim Government Plans to Seize Farmland
Umuahia, Abia State — Women from the Umuariaga community in Ikwuano Local Government Area have expressed concerns that the Abia State government intends to repurpose their farmland for a proposed smart city housing estate without their knowledge or consent.
Gathering at the Abia State Government House in Umuahia, the protesters argued that the loss of their farmland would threaten their ability to sustain their families and crops.
“We are alarmed by reports that individuals claiming to represent the state government are informing us that our community’s flat lands have been designated for a housing estate,” said Mrs. Glory Orji, leader of the protest.
She emphasized the distress and anxiety these developments have caused within the community. “This is the only flat land we have. If they take it from us, what will remain for our children?” Orji questioned. “How will we feed our families?”
The protesters also raised placards and sang songs, highlighting ongoing issues such as crop destruction caused by cattle belonging to herdsmen. They appealed to Governor Alex Otti for protection against the unauthorized seizure of their land.
Abia State Commissioner for Finance Uwaoma Ukandu, addressing the crowd, pledged to relay their concerns to Governor Otti. He urged the women to maintain peace and assured them that their grievances would be investigated.
The community awaits further clarification from the state government regarding the proposed project.
