Ebola: Lagos Activates Emergency Preparedness Measures After Abuja Case –

Lagos State Strengthens Measures Against Ebola Following Case in Abuja

LAGOS—The Lagos State Government has implemented enhanced preparedness measures to curb the potential spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), reacting to the confirmation of an index case in Abuja.

Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi announced that the government is reinforcing surveillance, laboratory testing, isolation facilities, and emergency response systems. This initiative comes in light of significant travel between Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.

In a recent statement, Abayomi emphasized that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has instructed relevant agencies to maintain a heightened state of alert and ensure readiness to respond swiftly to any suspected cases.

“The Emergency Operations Centre in Lagos has been proactive, conducting simulations to ensure that response teams are well-prepared,” Abayomi said. He also noted that the state is upgrading its isolation center and expanding capacity to accommodate potential cases.

Continuous training on infection prevention and control is being provided to health workers in both public and private facilities, according to the commissioner. He mentioned the establishment of a clear protocol for laboratory procedures, aiming to deliver test results within 24 hours.

Additionally, a dedicated Ebola Research Committee has been formed to review current evidence on treatments and vaccines. This group will guide the state’s response efforts.

To further enhance safety measures, the state is collaborating with federal authorities to improve screening protocols at airports and other points of entry. The digital enhancement of disease surveillance through the State Health Information Platform (SHIP) is also underway to facilitate real-time detection, contact tracing, and response.

Abayomi advised residents to practice good hygiene, regularly wash their hands with soap and water, and avoid contact with the bodily fluids of individuals who are unwell. He encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms—such as fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding—to avoid self-medication and consult health authorities prior to visiting a medical facility.

He urged health workers to maintain a high index of suspicion, gather patients’ travel histories when appropriate, and utilize personal protective equipment.

Residents are encouraged to report suspected cases or potential exposure through the emergency contacts provided: 112 or 767 for general emergencies, and 0802 316 9485 for the Directorate of Epidemiology, Biosecurity and Global Health.

“Do not panic. Stay calm, stay alert, and rely only on official information from the Lagos State Ministry of Health,” Abayomi stated, calling on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with public health authorities as the state bolsters its defenses against a possible Ebola outbreak.
