‘Ebola may force postponement of 2027 elections’ – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has indicated that the upcoming 2027 general election may be postponed due to an outbreak of Ebola in the country.
Jide Idris, the Director General of NCDC, stated that if the Ebola virus spreads significantly, the Nigerian government may need to reconsider the election schedule. The general election is currently set to begin in January, and electoral campaigns are already underway.
In recent days, Nigeria has reported an increase in Ebola cases, prompting concerns regarding public health and safety as the country approaches the election year.
Idris emphasized that the health sector does not intend to politicize the current health crisis. In an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he remarked, “We hope the election will not be postponed, but if the situation escalates, that may be a consideration. As of now, there is no need for that.”
He also noted that the current outbreak traces back to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and that the NCDC has been monitoring the situation closely. “Given our population movement and various ports of entry, we anticipated the possibility of an outbreak,” Idris added, reinforcing the message that Ebola will not be used as a political tool by any government.
