Ebonyi crisis: Lifting of curfew nothing to celebrate – Lawyer makes demands from Gov Nwifuru

Ebonyi Activist Lawyer Responds to Curfew Reversal in Amasiri

Maduabuchi Idam, an activist lawyer, expressed his discontent over the recent decision by Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, to lift the curfew imposed on the Amasiri community. Idam stated that there is little cause for celebration in this reversal, as it does not address the underlying issues that prompted his ongoing legal action against the state government.

In a formal statement, Idam emphasized that the legal proceedings will continue until the government provides compensation for the extrajudicial killings associated with a joint security operation, as well as for the suffering experienced by innocent residents of Amasiri. He is also demanding the reconstruction of properties damaged during the enforcement of the curfew.

“The reported lifting of the curfew does not call for celebration,” Idam said. “These measures were unwarranted and unprovoked from the outset. While I acknowledge this development, it will not halt the legal action already initiated.”

Idam confirmed that court processes have begun in the case of Maduabuchi O. Idam v. Chief of Defence Staff and seven others. He reiterated that his legal pursuit will persist unless the governor fully meets the demands for compensation and reconstruction.

“The power of the state exists to protect, not to victimize,” Idam added. “This injustice must not go unatoned.”
