Engage in tree planting to boost afforestation programme – Ogun govt tells plank sellers
Ogun State Government Promotes Tree Planting Among Woodworkers
The Ogun State Government is encouraging plank sellers and woodworkers to participate in tree planting initiatives aimed at enhancing afforestation, protecting the environment, and preserving the state’s forest reserves.
Taiwo Oludotun, the State Commissioner for Forestry, delivered this message during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Irewolede Plank Sellers and Wood Workers Association. He highlighted that the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun had planted approximately five million trees and noted that all nine of the state’s forest reserves are currently operational.
Oludotun emphasized the importance of collaboration between the wood industry and the government, urging timber merchants to source their materials from state-managed forest reserves while simultaneously committing to tree planting efforts.
During the anniversary event, several stakeholders called on plank sellers to leverage technology to enhance their operations and minimize environmental impact. They also stressed the importance of instilling a sense of environmental stewardship among younger generations, underscoring the role of sustainable forestry in fostering a healthier ecosystem and securing a better future.
In his welcome address, Mr. Gbemisola Adenekan, Chairman of the Irewolede Plank Sellers and Wood Workers Association, described the occasion as a celebration of not just a decade of achievements, but also of unity, resilience, hard work, and the collective spirit of the association.
Adenekan praised the Ogun State Government for its ongoing efforts to create a supportive environment for businesses and artisans. “Our members can only thrive when there is peace, security, and an environment conducive to legitimate economic activities,” he remarked.
He expressed gratitude to both past and present executives of the association and acknowledged the contributions of Adeyemi Azeez, the Governor’s Special Assistant on Student Affairs, for his dedication to the association’s growth.
Referring to the theme of the anniversary, “The Future of Wood: Securing Livelihoods, Advancing Agriculture, Preserving Culture, Promoting Health, and Driving Modernization,” Adenekan reiterated the need for responsibility, innovation, and collaboration within the industry. He assured attendees of the association’s commitment to protecting members’ interests, promoting unity, and contributing positively to the development of both the community and Ogun State.
