England villain ‘needs a little tap on the shoulder’

Former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has swatted Ollie Robinson over the way in which the firebrand England quick conducted himself throughout the opening Ashes Test.

The match took an explosive turn when Robinson delivered Usman Khawaja a wild send-off after claiming the prolific opener’s wicket in Australia’s first dig. That was despite the fact Khawaja had feasted on the English attack, helping himself to 141 runs as he chalked up his maiden Test century in the United Kingdom.

Some believe the broadcast picked up Robinson firing a distasteful barb at Khawaja as he departed, shouting: “F— off, you f—ing prick”.

Robinson’s questionable antics rolled on when he swiped the Australians’ tail in a press conference at stumps on day three.

“It’s something we’ve spoken about as a group,” Robinson said.

“We’ve said once we get past (Pat) Cummins we feel like they’ve got three No.11s (in Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland and Josh Hazlewood).

“It’s something we can target through the series and try to wrap things up quite quick and give us that momentum throughout the series.”

The Australian tail made a mockery of those remarks as Cummins and Lyon combined for a match-winning 55-run partnership on day five, lifting the tourists to a 1-0 series lead in remarkable scenes at Edgbaston.

And yet another spicy moment saw Robinson get tangled up in a tense exchange with Khawaja during a drinks break on day five.

Haddin took aim at the 17-Test seamer on LiSTNR’s Willow Talk podcast.

“Yes, it’s only the first Test match and England are playing a really attractive style, they’re about entertaining the crowd,” Haddin said.

“But they lost the Ashes Test and maybe emotion got the better of him.

“You win these Test matches on skill, on the last day, it’s a war of attrition, and maybe he just got a little bit in front of himself and just needs a little tap on the shoulder from some of his senior players.”

Podcast host Adam Peacock chimed in, whacking Robinson’s “three No.11s” sledge.

“Well, a 55-run partnership between Lyon and Cummins kind of belies that particular comment,” Peacock said.

“It’s come back to bite him, Ollie Robinson.”

The 55-run partnership forged by Cummins and Lyon steered Australia to an improbable two-wicket triumph.

The win marked Australia’s highest successful run chase against England since 1948.

The second Test, to be hosted by Lord’s, will get underway next Wednesday.
