Ex-NLC leader, Oyekan Arije is dead

Oyekan Arije, a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has passed away at the age of 87. His family confirmed his death in a statement released by activist lawyer Femi Aborisade on Wednesday, noting that Arije died in the early hours of Tuesday.
Arije was a prominent figure in the labour movement, actively participating since the 1960s. He served as chairman of the NLC from the late 1970s through the early 1980s.
In the statement, Aborisade expressed profound sadness over Arije’s death, stating, “with the consent and at the request of the biological children, I announce the transition to eternity of Comrade (PA) Oyekan Arije, a foremost Labour Leader and Socialist.” He highlighted Arije’s unwavering commitment to advocating for justice and freedom for the working class and marginalized groups, emphasizing Arije’s dedication to challenging the economic and political constraints imposed by the capitalist elite.
