Fela receives Grammy Lifetime Achievement award

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary Afrobeat musician, has made history as the first African artist to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. This prestigious recognition was awarded posthumously at the Special Merit Awards ceremony held on January 31, 2026, in Los Angeles, just a day before the main Grammy Awards.
Fela’s children—Yeni, Kunle, Shalewa, and Femi Kuti—attended the ceremony to accept the award on their father’s behalf. During her speech, Yeni expressed gratitude to the Recording Academy and conveyed her belief that their father would be proud and “smiling down on us.” She also acknowledged her siblings who were unable to attend and celebrated her nephew, Made Kuti, for his contributions in advancing the Afrobeat genre.
Femi Kuti, speaking on the occasion, extended his appreciation to all those who have helped promote Afrobeat around the globe, including DJs, media professionals, their record label Partisan, legal teams, and fans. He described the recognition as a significant milestone not only for their father but for Africa itself and for the broader struggle for justice. He emphasized the importance of Afrobeat for world peace and social movements.
Fela Anikulapo-Kuti shares this distinguished honor with other renowned musicians such as Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, and Paul Simon, highlighting the global impact of his music and legacy.
