FG heeds Umeh’s call for intervention in erosion menace in Anambra

Senator Umeh Seeks Federal Intervention for Erosion Crisis in Anambra
AWKA, Nigeria — Senator Victor Umeh, representing the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, has called on the federal government to intervene in erosion-prone areas throughout Anambra State. His appeal follows a visit to several locations, including Obosi, Ogidi, and Awka, where he witnessed significant erosion-related damage, resulting in collapsed homes and disrupted transportation.
In September, Umeh raised concerns in the Senate, urging that the Anambra Central Senatorial District be declared an ecological disaster zone. The senator’s motion focused on the urgent need for federal assistance to address the erosion crisis affecting the region.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Umeh reported that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s office, through its ecological fund, has shown readiness to initiate intervention plans. This development is an encouraging response to his earlier calls for action.
“When I visited the affected areas, I immediately filed a motion,” Umeh said. “This week, the ecological fund office reached out to me, and I have already responded, emphasizing that it is their responsibility to procure services and award contracts for necessary remediation work.”
The senator expressed his commitment to collaborate with the ecological fund office, suggesting they schedule site inspections together. In his view, these efforts reflect his dedication to supporting his constituents in light of the ongoing erosion challenges.
In addition to addressing erosion issues, Umeh highlighted his efforts in educational assistance through a comprehensive scholarship program. Despite challenges related to federal funding for constituency projects, he has maintained this program for three years, with expenditures reaching tens of millions of naira.
“The upcoming session’s fees total approximately N75 million,” Umeh stated. “Though the government often delays disbursing funds, we are committed to fulfilling our financial obligations to students in all seven local government areas I represent.”
