Fire destroys 12 shops at Kano community market

A fire that broke out at Gezawa Commodity Market late Sunday night has left several traders in distress. According to a report from a local radio station, the blaze ignited around midnight and continued to burn for approximately six hours, extinguishing around 6 a.m.

The affected shops were primarily those of traders dealing in palm oil, mats, mattresses, and various other goods. Many traders reported being alerted by distress calls in the early hours of the morning, informing them that their businesses were engulfed in flames.

Traders claimed that the fire truck stationed at Gezawa Commodity Market was non-functional, which hindered their ability to respond swiftly to the emergency. Consequently, they had to seek assistance from firefighters located in Nassarawa.

In light of the incident, traders are urging both the Kano State Government and the Gezawa Local Government Council to provide a reliable fire truck for the area to ensure a prompt response to similar emergencies in the future. The cause of the fire and the total value of property lost remain unknown as authorities continue to investigate the situation.
