“First time home before England!”: Fans fume as commentary legend Clive Tyldesley reveals his World Cup is over

One of the most recognised voices in British football commentary won’t be heard again at World Cup 2022 (opens in new tab) after Clive Tyldesley revealed he’s heading home from Qatar.

Tyldesley is a stalwart of football coverage in the UK, but he’s no longer the number one man behind the microphone for ITV, with Sam Matterface now holding that role.

And Tyldesley revealed on Twitter that he’s heading home before the quarter-finals have even started.

He said: “My 8th World Cup in the job of my dreams and the first time I’m going to be home before England! Thank you for your company”.

The news didn’t go down well, as Tyldesley received messages of support from his baffled followers.

One said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to live in an era when likes of yourself, Motson and Davies were regular commentators on the big occasion.

“Baffled how you are 2nd choice on ITV, don’t think folk know or appreciate your research prior to fixtures also.”

“You ARE the voice of England in major tournaments, sir,” said another reply.

“Absolutely disgraceful from ITV, still can’t get over it. Hope you do read some of these comments and any underlying sense of bitterness you may still have is eased!”

There was a lot of praise for Tyldesley’s rapport with popular co-commentator Ally McCoist, too.

“You and Ally McCoist have been the stars of tournament, shocking decision by ITV,” said another reply.

“You guys should be first choice without a doubt. The prep work and natural talent you both have shines through! Enjoy the wine! More than deserved!”

ITV will show two quarter-finals, one semi-final, the third-place play-off and the final this year – but Tyldesley will be watching on from home.
