Five Dead, Three Injured in Niger State Electrocution Incident

KATCHA, Niger State — A tragic electrocution incident on the Kupafu–Essa village axis of the Katcha highway claimed the lives of five individuals and left three others seriously injured on April 20, 2026.

The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. when a trailer transporting cartons of milk and passengers from Lagos to Kano encountered a traffic blockage. In an attempt to navigate the obstruction, the driver diverted the vehicle onto a nearby bush path.

During this diversion, the trailer and its passengers reportedly came into contact with high-voltage power lines. The contact resulted in immediate electrocution for five passengers, while three others were injured and required urgent medical care.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed that the injured victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Bida for treatment. The remains of the deceased were transported to the General Hospital in Badeggi, Katcha.

Authorities noted that the driver of the trailer has yet to be located, and efforts are underway to apprehend him for further investigation.
