Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Inaugurates Sub-Committees for 67th National Council on Health

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has officially inaugurated the sub-committees for the 67th Regular National Council on Health (NCH) and urged members to uphold diligence, integrity, professionalism, and objectivity in their work.

The 67th NCH will take place from November 16 to 20, 2026, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, under the theme, “From Commitment to Results: Delivering Quality and Equitable Healthcare for All Nigerians.”

At the inaugural meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, represented by Dr. John Ovuoraye, Director of Health Planning, Research, and Statistics, emphasized the importance of the NCH as a vital platform for policy dialogue and decision-making within Nigeria’s health sector.

“The Technical Committee and its sub-committees will lay the groundwork for developing evidence-based and implementable recommendations for the Council’s consideration,” she stated.

The Permanent Secretary expressed gratitude to the members for accepting their roles, noting that their involvement reflects a collective commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s health system and improving the quality of life for its citizens. She encouraged members to approach their tasks with an open mind and a dedication to achieving results. She also highlighted the importance of fostering constructive collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nasarawa State Local Organising Committee.

“The quality of the work produced by these sub-committees will significantly impact the effectiveness of the recommendations presented to the NCH,” she added.

Dr. Shekwonugaza Gwamna, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Health, represented by Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Hassan, the Permanent Secretary, welcomed attendees and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to ensure a successful NCH.

The meeting allowed the Local Organising Committee to review its progress, receive guidance from the Federal Ministry, and enhance preparations for the conference. Key preparatory matters discussed included the formal inauguration of the sub-committees, clarification of roles for chairpersons and members, finalization of the conference logo, and instructions for the timely submission of memoranda from states.

While members of the Nasarawa State Local Organising Committee participated virtually, officials from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare attended in person.

The upcoming 67th NCH is anticipated to convene essential stakeholders from both the Federal and State health sectors to address critical health priorities and devise actionable recommendations aimed at improving quality, equity, and responsiveness in healthcare across Nigeria.
