Former Biden Administration Officials Call on Democratic Candidates to Denounce Gaza Policy

A group of former U.S. officials who resigned from President Joe Biden’s administration in protest of his policy toward Gaza is urging potential Democratic candidates for the 2028 presidential election to publicly reject that policy.

In a joint statement released Wednesday titled “Gaza Resignees,” 12 former officials who left their posts between late 2023 and 2024 expressed their dissent regarding what they described as “illegal and unconditional support for Israel’s actions in Gaza.”

The statement emphasized the necessity of accountability, asserting, “The most basic level of accountability, the most minimal level of consequences, is to ensure that those who have wreaked so much harm from within the highest levels of our government cannot return to it.”

The group is calling on candidates seeking the 2028 Democratic nomination to pledge not to hire any administration officials who played a role in facilitating Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Human rights organizations, scholars, and United Nations inquiries have indicated that the conflict has had devastating consequences, with many labeling Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocidal. Palestinian health authorities report that since the onset of the conflict in October 2023, at least 74,564 Palestinians have died and more than 175,770 have been injured.

The Biden administration, which lasted from 2021 to 2024, has faced significant criticism from progressive lawmakers and activist groups as the conflict escalated. U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are among those who have voiced opposition to the continuous U.S. support for Israel, a stance that has persisted since the re-election of former President Donald Trump last year.

In their statement, the former officials accused some architects of Biden’s Gaza policy of attempting to “whitewash their own roles in enabling genocide.” They criticized these individuals for failing to defend U.S. laws and for allegedly pursuing policies that violate both U.S. and international law.

The statement outlined three specific pledges they want Democratic candidates to commit to: upholding the Constitution and furthering the national interest of the United States; acknowledging the U.S.’s complicity in Israel’s actions in Gaza through military aid, funding, and diplomatic support; and creating an administration that excludes anyone involved in policies characterized by unconditional support for Israel.

The former officials assert that their requests reflect a commitment to ethical governmental practices and accountability in U.S. foreign policy.
