Four injured in multiple crash involving truck, bus, nine motorcyclists in Lagos

Four Injured in Lagos Multi-Vehicle Collision
LAGOS—Four individuals sustained critical injuries in a multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday at First Gate, inward Mile 2. The incident involved a Mack truck carrying a fully loaded 40-foot container, another truck, a commercial bus, and nine commercial motorcyclists.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the Mack truck driver was apprehended following the collision. In addition to the Mack truck, a second truck carrying a 20-foot container and a T4 commercial bus with the registration number AAA 723 YF were also involved.
Preliminary investigations suggest that brake failure in the Mack truck may have caused the driver to lose control, resulting in a chain-reaction crash involving the other vehicles and the motorcyclists, who were reportedly operating on a restricted highway.
Of the injured, three are male and one is female, all suffering from multiple fractures in their arms and legs. They received immediate medical attention following the accident.
LASTMA officials, who were conducting routine traffic management operations in the area, quickly responded to the scene, implementing emergency traffic control and rescue efforts. The injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital by security personnel from the Roro Police Division for urgent care.
In response to the incident, LASTMA secured the scene and coordinated the removal of damaged vehicles to alleviate traffic congestion and restore normal flow in the area.
The drivers involved in the crash have been handed over to the police for further investigation and potential prosecution based on the findings.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed sympathy for the injured victims and their families, wishing them a swift recovery. He voiced concern regarding the ongoing use of commercial motorcycles on restricted highways, emphasizing the heightened risks posed by the presence of heavy-duty vehicles.
Bakare-Oki urged all motorists, commercial transport operators, and road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and ensure that vehicles undergo regular mechanical inspections. He highlighted the critical importance of maintaining braking systems, tires, and steering mechanisms as essential safety measures.
“Mechanical roadworthiness is not merely a regulatory requirement; it is an indispensable safeguard for the preservation of human lives,” Bakare-Oki stated, reinforcing the need for compliance with traffic regulations to help reduce preventable accidents on major transport routes.
