Fresh vision to be used in NRL’s case against Leniu

New vision has been released showing Brisbane Broncos players Ezra Mam and Billy Walters reacting to an allegedly racially motivated comment made by new Roosters recruit Spencer Leniu.

Leniu was placed on report by referee Adam Gee during the second of two NRL fixtures on Sunday following a heated on-field incident.

Broncos players allege Leniu called Mam a “monkey”, and Indigenous legend Johnathan Thurston later reported Mam was in tears after the game.

Reports indicate the fresh vision will be used as part of the NRL’s case against Leniu.

It appears that Walters reacts to something that Leniu said to Mam two tackles before the complaint was made.

Walters appears to chase Leniu down as play continues, conversing with him multiple times.

Two tackles later, Leniu was placed on report.

There is no audio from Walters’ reaction at this stage.

The footage comes as the NRL is under increasing pressure to come down hard on Leniu.

If Leniu pleads guilty, Walters will not be required to give evidence.

However, if Leniu pushes his innocence, Walters will need to make a statement.

The new Roosters player could face the NRL judiciary as soon as next Tuesday night.

Two years ago, Marcelo Montoya was suspended for four matches after being found guilty of using a homophobic slur, while three years ago Mitch Barnett escaped sanction after an alleged racial incident with Tyrone Peachey due to a lack of evidence.
