Friendly: ‘I love Chelle’s idea’ – Portugal boss, Martinez names two high quality Super Eagles stars

Portugal’s Martinez Acknowledges Nigeria’s Resilience Ahead of Friendly Match
LISBON, Portugal — Roberto Martinez, head coach of the Portugal national football team, has recognized Nigeria as a competitive adversary, despite the absence of key forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman ahead of their international friendly.
Following Nigeria’s recent victory in the Unity Cup, Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle confirmed that Osimhen and Lookman will not participate in the upcoming match, as they are being rested after a demanding season with their respective clubs.
Martinez emphasized that both teams stand to gain from this encounter as Portugal continues its preparations for future competitions. In a pre-match press conference, he expressed excitement for a challenging matchup, praising Nigeria’s tactical versatility and Chelle’s ability to adapt strategies based on player strengths.
“Nigeria’s recent performances, such as their friendly against Poland, demonstrate a dynamic and flexible approach,” Martinez noted. “Facing a team like Nigeria involves various considerations, particularly in understanding how their forward players can inform our defensive strategy.”
Martinez highlighted the competitive nature of the Nigerian squad, noting the skill and experience of players like Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi. He acknowledged that, while the absence of Osimhen and Lookman is notable, Nigeria possesses other talented athletes capable of performing at a high level.
“I anticipate a very competitive game with remarkable athletes such as Bassey and Iwobi, whom I know well,” Martinez added. “It will be an engaging match that promises to be beneficial for both teams.”
