Super Eagles Defender Reflects on Competitive Loss to Portugal

LEIRIA, Portugal — Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi expressed confidence in his team’s effort following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in a friendly match at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa on Wednesday night.

The three-time African champions showcased significant improvement compared to their last encounter with Portugal, where they endured a 4-0 loss. This time, Sanusi noted that the Super Eagles effectively challenged the Portuguese defense, especially during the first half, creating several scoring opportunities.

“The first half was very difficult for us, but we managed to control it a bit,” said Sanusi. “Portugal is very strong; four years ago we conceded four goals, and now we conceded fewer, which was good.”

Sanusi, who plays for Primeira Liga champions FC Porto, reiterated his support for the Portuguese national team, emphasizing his connection to the country. “It’s my second country, so may they be world champions,” he said when asked about Portugal’s prospects for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles’ performance in this match indicates a promising direction as they prepare for future competitions.
