FRSC blames speeding for Otedola Bridge tanker fire

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos Sector Command has reported that excessive speed was a contributing factor in a tanker accident that resulted in a fire under the Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident, involving a diesel-laden tanker, occurred around 4:10 p.m. on Monday in the outward section of the expressway. According to a statement from Elizabeth Jayeola, the Sector Public Education Officer, the tanker crashed into the underpass beneath the bridge, igniting a fire.

Emergency responders were dispatched quickly; the FRSC rescue unit arrived at 4:20 p.m., just five minutes after the accident was reported at 4:15 p.m.

Preliminary investigations indicated that speeding was likely the cause of the crash. Two adult males sustained injuries and were transported to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for treatment. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported immediately following the incident.

FRSC personnel collaborated with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, law enforcement, and other emergency responders to manage the fire, direct traffic, and mitigate risks to road users and nearby infrastructure.

Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, the FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, emphasized that speeding poses a significant threat to road safety, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles transporting hazardous materials. He urged motorists to exercise caution near emergency sites by reducing speed, maintaining a safe distance, following traffic instructions, and refraining from obstructing emergency personnel. The public was also advised against gathering near the scene of the fire or attempting to take photographs or videos.
