Govt must explain to Nigerians why it’s taking loans – Nyameh

Taraba State Governorship Candidate Advocates for Transparent Government Borrowing

JALINGO, Nigeria — Professor Jerome Nyameh, the governorship candidate for the Accord Party in Taraba State, has emphasized the need for increased transparency and accountability in government borrowing. He stated that loans should be secured solely for initiatives that promise to generate revenue and enhance the quality of life for citizens.

During a press conference held in Jalingo on Friday, Nyameh articulated the duty of governing bodies to clearly communicate the rationale behind borrowing, detailing the intended use of funds and the anticipated benefits for the state.

“Citizens need to be informed about the necessity of a loan, its allocation, and the impact it will have on their lives and the projects for which it is obtained,” he said.

Nyameh further asserted that integrity should govern every phase of the borrowing process, from the acquisition of funds to the execution of financed projects.

He argued that government borrowing must be aligned with strategic initiatives that foster economic growth, create jobs, and ensure the state can repay its debts without imposing undue financial strains on future generations.

The candidate warned against securing loans for projects lacking clear objectives or limited economic viability, calling such practices harmful to sustainable development and fiscal prudence.

“Prudent financial management is crucial for building a stable economy and restoring public confidence in governance. Accountability in public spending is essential to ensure that borrowed funds yield measurable benefits for the populace,” Nyameh concluded.
