Gunmen Attack Mining Site in Plateau State, Killing Three Women
At least three women were confirmed dead, and several others sustained injuries following an attack by suspected Fulani militias at a mining site in the Rakum community, located in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived at the mining site around 4:30 p.m. on Monday, opening fire on individuals at work. The gunmen fled the scene shortly after the attack.
John Sabo, a survivor, told reporters that the attackers emerged from nearby rocks and bushes. He described the victims as individuals trying to earn a living. “We are deeply worried because people should be able to go about their legitimate businesses without being attacked,” Sabo said, urging security forces to intensify efforts to apprehend the attackers and prevent future violence in the community.
Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), also confirmed the incident, labeling it a troubling development that heightens existing concerns about safety in the region. Tengwong stated, “The latest attack has again shown that those responsible for violence in Plateau State seem unwilling to allow peace to return.”
He reiterated the urgency for security agencies to swiftly pursue those involved and ensure they face justice. Tengwong noted that this latest incident occurred amidst a surge in violent attacks across the state in recent weeks, particularly affecting the Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bokkos Local Government Areas, despite an ongoing curfew imposed by the state government.
