Senator Chris Murphy Hospitalized After Stroke, Reports Positive Condition
United States Senator Chris Murphy, a prominent Democratic lawmaker from Connecticut, is hospitalized following a stroke but remains “awake and alert,” according to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt.
Murphy sought medical attention on Saturday due to numbness in his arm and was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital, one of the nation’s leading medical facilities. His aide reported that he is “responding well to treatment” and that the medical team is encouraged by his progress.
“The doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt stated.
The senator is not facing re-election in the upcoming midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. However, he is seen as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2028.
A member of the Senate for 20 years, Murphy is currently a leading Democrat on two influential committees: the Senate Appropriations Committee, which oversees federal funding, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
In October, Murphy undertook a tour of the Middle East, marking the first visit by a Democratic senator since the onset of hostilities between the United States and Iran in February.
Murphy has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and the Iran conflict, asserting that Democrats would seek to restrict funding for the war if they gain control of the Senate. He has also accused the Department of Defense of denying him access to a U.S. military base in Qatar during his recent trip and has promised to investigate allegations of corruption involving Trump and his family if the Democrats win the Senate.
In response to Murphy’s condition, Trump expressed surprise, stating, “Nobody wants to have that.”
