How we made Nigerian singer Buju change his name because of Buju Banton – Fat Joe

American rapper Fat Joe recently revealed that he and others exerted pressure on Nigerian artist BNXN, formerly known as Buju, to modify his stage name. During a podcast interview featuring both Fat Joe and Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton, Fat Joe asserted that the decision was rooted in respect for Banton’s legacy.
“We dissed him on TV and told him to shut it down,” Fat Joe said, referring to BNXN’s original name. “There is only one Buju Banton.”
Buju Banton elaborated on the significance of his own stage name, explaining that it was bestowed upon him by his mother, which distinguishes it from many artists who derive their names from friends or personal choices. He explained that he added “Banton” in tribute to a Jamaican DJ he greatly admired.
“Most people get their names from their friends or coin them,” Banton said. “But my name came from my mom. Then I added Banton due to my admiration for Burr Banton.”
BNXN initially launched his career under the name “Buju,” but later transitioned to his new moniker amid alleged copyright concerns.
