Former President Obasanjo Highlights Environmental Issues at Kano Ceremony
Kano, Nigeria — Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has linked climate change and global warming to human actions driven by greed, negligence, and the overexploitation of natural resources. He made these remarks during a recent ceremony in Kano, where he discussed his Environment and Sustainability Initiative and Trust Fund, named in honor of Abubakar Mahmoud, the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Obasanjo emphasized that harmful human behaviors are the primary drivers of climate change and urged for a stronger commitment to environmental protection. He remarked that the world was initially created in a state of equilibrium, but selfish practices have led to detrimental environmental impacts.
“God created the world in harmony, but through our greed, carelessness, and reckless exploitation of nature, we have done more harm than good,” Obasanjo stated. He called upon individuals, organizations, and governments to take collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
The former president also expressed his dedication to environmental sustainability, noting he has planted over 3.5 million trees as part of his efforts to combat climate change.
Dahiru Hashim, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in Kano State, welcomed Obasanjo’s initiative, describing it as a significant step towards environmental conservation and sustainable development. He confirmed the state government’s commitment by approving 10,000 tree seedlings for the Mahmoud Environment and Sustainability Trust Fund.
Abubakar Mahmoud highlighted that the initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability and protect the ecosystem for both current and future generations. He mentioned that what began as a small-scale project has evolved into specialized conservation programs that not only protect local communities but also help preserve numerous plant species.
