Hunger in Nigeria now national emergency – Peter Obi cries out

Peter Obi Calls Hunger a National Emergency on World Food Day

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has declared the current level of hunger in Nigeria a national emergency. His comments were made in a post on his verified X account on Friday, coinciding with World Food Day.

Obi highlighted the distressing realities faced by millions of families across the country, where hunger, poverty, and insecurity are pervasive issues. He pointed out that Nigeria is among the hungriest nations globally, ranking 117th out of 125 countries, a decline from 109th place in 2023 when the current administration took office.

The former governor of Anambra State expressed deep concern over the nation’s agricultural potential, noting that a significant portion—approximately 60 percent—of Nigeria’s arable land remains uncultivated. This underutilization contributes to the challenges posed by terrorist organizations and other non-state actors who exploit these remote areas.

“On World Food Day, it is evident that hunger in Nigeria must be declared a national emergency,” Obi stated. “Nigerians deserve a country where no family goes to bed hungry, where farmers can work without fear, and where poverty and insecurity are tackled with urgency and compassion.”

He emphasized the need for concerted efforts to combat hunger, promising that under his leadership, the government would prioritize securing the nation and supporting farmers through targeted grants and subsidies.

“Together, we can build a Nigeria where no one goes to bed hungry and every farmer can work in peace and dignity. A New Nigeria is possible,” he added.
