‘Hunkuyi’s comment on El-Rufai’s detention could heighten political tension’ – Ashiru

Kaduna State gubernatorial candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Isa Mohammed Ashiru, has raised concerns regarding recent remarks made by former Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi about the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. Ashiru cautioned that such comments could escalate political tensions in the state.
Abdulwaheed Olayinka Adubi, Chief Press Secretary and spokesperson for Ashiru, issued a statement on Tuesday criticizing Hunkuyi’s assertion that El-Rufai should remain in detention until after the 2027 general elections. Ashiru deemed Hunkuyi’s comments as unfortunate and counterproductive, suggesting they could exacerbate political discord among Kaduna State residents.
In the statement, Ashiru emphasized the importance of addressing El-Rufai’s situation within the framework of the law, adhering to established judicial processes rather than interjecting political motives into the discussion. He reiterated the necessity of respecting the rule of law and ensuring due process for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations or positions.
Ashiru warned political leaders against statements that could be perceived as legitimizing detention as a political strategy. He expressed that the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy relies on the consistent application of the law and the protection of citizens’ rights.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Ashiru highlighted the need for responsible leadership and collaborative efforts among political figures in a state that has faced significant political and security challenges. He argued that political differences should not undermine peaceful coexistence or foster hostility among the population.
The ADC candidate urged party leaders, supporters, and stakeholders to exercise caution in their public statements and to prioritize the welfare of Kaduna State over partisan concerns. He reiterated that a thriving democracy accommodates opposing viewpoints, allows for independent functioning of institutions, and applies the law fairly.
“The continued detention of the former governor should be resolved through appropriate legal channels, and political leaders must avoid comments that could prejudge the situation or inflame public sentiment,” the statement concluded. Ashiru called for a collective commitment to peace, mutual respect, and political tolerance, emphasizing that the future of Kaduna State hinges on leaders prioritizing the unity and welfare of the populace above narrow political interests.
