Nigerian actress Bunmi Nelson revealed during a recent interview that she underestimated her colleague, Funke Akindele, in the early stages of their careers. Speaking on the “Talk to B” podcast with actress Biola Adebayo, Nelson expressed regret for not fully recognizing Akindele’s potential back in 2006.
“If I knew Funke would go far like this, I would have held her tight,” Nelson said, reflecting on their prior interactions. She emphasized the importance of not underestimating others, stating, “Don’t look down on anyone except when you’re admiring their shoelaces.”
Nelson recounted how Akindele once approached her for assistance in securing a location to shoot. At the time, Nelson was actively involved in the film industry and was providing her home as a shooting location. She noted, “It was even Funke that took me to Odun Ifa,” indicating their professional connection.
Despite their past collaboration, Nelson admitted to missed opportunities when she ignored Akindele’s calls. “I had every opportunity when Funke was calling me because the industry was not overpopulated like now,” she said, reflecting on how those moments shaped her view of success and humility.
The actress concluded with a personal lesson, stating, “If there’s anything I have learned in this life, it is humility. I’m more humble now than anything else because life has taught me the hard way that nothing is constant.”
