I never protested against Jonathan, I carried placard for prayer walk – Pastor Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has refuted claims that he participated in a protest against former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a recent video addressed to his followers, Adeboye clarified that a widely circulated photograph depicting him holding a placard was taken during a prayer walk and was not an act of protest. He stated, “I cannot deny carrying a placard, but it wasn’t a protest; it was part of a prayer walk.”

Adeboye recounted how he had been labeled a “wicked man” by critics who misrepresented the context of the placard. He explained that he was following a directive from the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which called for churches to participate in prayer walks in their communities.

“The CAN chairman asked all churches to do a prayer walk near their buildings, and that’s what I did in Ebute Metta,” he said. “A walk is a walk, whether it’s a prayer walk or not. You might have seen someone carrying a placard during a walk.”

The clergyman noted that although he participated in this event in 2020, he was accused of protesting against Jonathan, who left office in 2015, indicating a misrepresentation of time and context.

Adeboye’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions surrounding the role of religious leaders in political discourse.
