Milan, Italy — Divine Ikubor, the Nigerian Afrobeats artist known as Rema, shared details about his pre-performance rituals during a recent interview with Dazed at Milan Fashion Week. Rema made headlines not only for his music but also for walking the runway for the fashion brand Diesel.

In the interview, he disclosed that his preparations for a performance include drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and engaging in prayer. He emphasized the importance of conducting a sound check with his team to ensure everything is set for a successful show.

“A little tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” Rema said when asked about his routine before taking the stage.

Rema expressed that performing live is more demanding than modeling, stating, “Performing has a lot to do with your breathwork, and you have to keep the crowd going.”

He also mentioned that he finds inspiration in music from diverse cultures, noting, “I have been listening to a lot of Sudanese cultural live music.” Additionally, Rema identified smoking as his “biggest vice.”

By sharing these insights, Rema highlights both the preparation and personal challenges faced by artists in the entertainment industry.
