Ibadan: Goods, household items destroyed as fire ravages Gbaji market

A fire broke out Thursday night at the Gbaji market, located along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway, affecting at least eight shops.
Hon. Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident in a statement released Friday morning. He reported no casualties as a result of the blaze.
Akinwande noted that firefighters faced challenges accessing the affected area due to illegal structures obstructing the roads within the market. Upon arrival, crews found several shops engulfed in flames and thick smoke billowing from the scene.
“The timely intervention of the agency prevented the fire from spreading further, thereby averting more extensive damage to property,” Akinwande said.
He emphasized that the obstruction posed by illegal structures and merchandise complicated the response efforts, highlighting the need for better regulation in the market area.
