ICE agent shoots man in car with five-year-old child in New York: Mayor | Civil Rights News

ICE Agent Shoots Man in Marble Hill, NYC; Mayor Calls for Accountability
October 9, 2026
NEW YORK — An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City on Thursday, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who described the situation as both “unconscionable” and “incredibly serious.”
In a statement shared on X, Mamdani reported that, early Thursday afternoon, ICE agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in a vehicle before discharging their weapons multiple times. The mayor emphasized that the child appeared to be unharmed.
Mamdani stated he has reached out to President Donald Trump, demanding an end to all ICE enforcement actions in the city. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” he asserted.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) clarified that the ICE agents were executing a “targeted enforcement operation” at approximately 4 p.m. to apprehend a Dominican national with a criminal conviction. According to DHS, an officer “discharged his weapon,” resulting in injuries to the man, who is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. The New York Police Department confirmed that the injured man remains conscious.
The incident has drawn attention as public scrutiny of ICE has intensified in recent months. Several similar incidents have led to increased criticism of the agency’s operations. Earlier this year, federal immigration agents shot two U.S. citizens in separate incidents in Minneapolis, raising further questions about ICE’s tactics and accountability.
Following the January incidents, officials labeled one of the victims a “domestic terrorist,” despite contradictory video evidence. In response to growing public outcry, the federal government redirected the investigation to federal authorities, rejected calls for a civil rights inquiry, and significantly increased agent presence in Minnesota.
With a 2022 target of one million deportations per year, ICE has expanded significantly, growing to over 22,000 agents and becoming the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency. Under a tax bill signed by Trump last year, the agency’s allocation is approximately $75 billion over four years.
As protestors gather at the scene of Thursday’s shooting, the call for accountability and reform within ICE continues to resonate throughout the community and beyond.
