‘If I saw balcony that day, I’d have jumped’ – Davido opens up on suicidal experience

Afrobeats Star Davido Discusses Early Fame and Mental Health Struggles

Afrobeats artist David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, recently shared insights into his initial challenges with fame, including significant mental health struggles that led to thoughts of suicide.

In a recent episode of the Vibe Podcast, Davido recounted an incident shortly after he gained popularity. He described how a woman he had taken to a hotel room captured a photo of him while he slept and shared it on social media. The post resulted in widespread backlash and raised concerns among his fans and family.

At the time, Davido was relatively young and inexperienced in handling the pressures of fame and maintaining personal boundaries. “The incident happened about two months after I became famous,” he said. “I had two hit songs, and my popularity was surging. We performed in Ghana, and the reception was overwhelming. I was excited about my newfound fame.”

He recalled the evening leading up to the incident: “We went to the club, and I enjoyed the attention from fans. It was my first opportunity to spend time with a woman in my hotel room after a show. I remember having a great night and then falling asleep.”

Davido described his abrupt awakening to a knock on the door from his manager, who urged him to stay calm. “I had no idea what was happening,” he said. “It turned out a lady had posted a picture of me sleeping. My father and sisters were calling me. If I had seen a balcony that day, I would have jumped… I was young and too involved with women,” he admitted.

The incident served as a crucial lesson for Davido, emphasizing the importance of protecting his reputation and establishing personal boundaries as a celebrity.
