I’m Yoruba’s number one monarch historically, I don’t fight for supremacy – Alaafin of Oyo declares

During an interview on the program “State Affairs” with Edmund Obilo, Owoade discussed the historical context of his position as a prominent figure in Yorubaland. He stated that he is not engaged in a quest for supremacy among the Yoruba royalty.
When asked whether he considers himself the supreme king in Yorubaland, Owoade responded, “Historically, yes. If you want to go by history and the contribution of Oyo to Yoruba civilization, then I would say that the Alaafin is number one.”
In 2025, a notable disagreement arose between the Alaafin and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi. The conflict began when the Ooni bestowed the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland upon Dotun Sanusi, a businessman from Ibadan. In response, the Alaafin demanded that the Ooni withdraw the title within 48 hours, asserting that the Ooni lacks the authority to grant a title that encompasses all of Yorubaland.
