Police Arrest Two Suspects in Rape and Murder of Nursing Student

Obowo, Imo State — Police operatives from the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters, working in conjunction with local community members, have apprehended two suspects in connection with the rape and murder of 21-year-old Wendy Achumba. Achumba, a nursing student at Mercy College of Nursing Science in Umulogho, was found dead at her off-campus residence in Umuadara, Obowo Local Government Area.

Henry Okoye, a spokesperson for the Imo Police, confirmed the arrests of Onyema Okonkwo, 32, and Emmanuel Onyekachi, 25, both residents of the area where the alleged crime took place.

Okoye stated that the arrests resulted from ongoing, intelligence-driven investigations by police operatives in collaboration with community leaders. During questioning, the suspects admitted to multiple instances of rape before ultimately killing the victim.

In his confession, Okonkwo indicated that Achumba recognized both men, prompting them to take drastic measures to conceal their crime, which included attacking her with a stick and a machete.

The suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation. They are expected to face legal proceedings upon the conclusion of this investigation.

Police Commissioner Audu Garba Bosso assured the public that the case would be handled with professionalism and diligence, emphasizing that anyone found responsible would be subject to the full extent of the law. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
