Independence anniversary: Kaduna govt releases 27 inmates

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has granted clemency to 27 inmates in correctional facilities across the state in honor of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. This decision raises the total number of individuals benefiting from his administration’s clemency efforts to more than 500.

Ahmed Maiyaki, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, announced the initiative in a statement released in Kaduna. The clemency exercise includes the release of eligible inmates and the payment of fines and compensation for others, reflecting the administration’s commitment to restorative justice.

Since taking office in May 2023, the government has allocated over 300 million Naira for the payment of fines and victim compensation. Maiyaki emphasized the significance of this clemency, stating that it embodies the compassion and shared humanity essential for building resilient communities.

“The impact of clemency goes beyond mere release; it serves to restore hope and foster responsible citizenship,” he noted.

Sir James A. Kanyip, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, highlighted that this clemency initiative aligns with the governor’s history of granting mercy during significant national celebrations, including New Year, Democracy Day, and Independence Day. He explained that the prerogative of mercy follows established protocols to ensure accountability and rehabilitation in conjunction with the responsibilities of freedom.

Kanyip remarked that the payment of fines and compensation adds a restorative element to the initiative by alleviating financial obstacles that may keep deserving inmates incarcerated, while also addressing the interests of victims. He emphasized that the consistency and scale of these interventions demonstrate a sustained approach to justice and social reintegration.

“Each beneficiary signifies another chance at life, a family reunion, and a community invested in successful reintegration. This commitment highlights the belief that justice is most effective when it fosters renewal,” Kanyip stated.

Maiyaki concluded by urging the beneficiaries to return to their families and communities as responsible and contributing citizens.
