Insecurity: Acquire weapons legally, defend yourselves from bandits – Emir tells Northerners

Emir of Argungu Calls for Legal Weapon Acquisition Amid Rising Banditry

ARGUNGU, Nigeria — The Emir of Argungu, Muhammad Samaila Mera, has encouraged residents to obtain weapons through legal channels to protect their communities from ongoing bandit attacks.

During a meeting at his palace attended by local leaders, including district, village, and ward heads, Mera emphasized the importance of vigilance and proactive measures against potential threats from terrorists and criminals.

“If you acquire such weapons legally, ensure that the bandits know your community is prepared to defend itself. This can serve as a deterrent,” he said. “By demonstrating that you can protect yourselves, you may discourage potential attacks.”

The Emir highlighted that Islam does not advocate for inaction in the face of violence. “It is unjust for a Muslim to remain passive while criminals harm the innocent, take hostages, and assault our women. It is crucial to prepare to safeguard your families and communities from any form of attack,” he stated.

Mera expressed concern that during attacks, not only residents flee, but village leaders also abandon their posts. The Emir’s comments underscore a growing sentiment within the community regarding the need for self-defense amidst increasing insecurity.
