Qatar Rejects Allegations of Election Interference by Israeli Politicians
As Israel awaits the final results of its contentious elections, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed accusations of interference from Israeli political figures. These allegations, primarily driven by members of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, claim that Qatar has provided financial support to Arab political parties in Israel to influence voter turnout.
In a post on social media platform X, Majed al-Ansari, the foreign ministry spokesman, categorically denied any involvement in the elections. “We reject the accusations made by certain Israeli politicians and their contacts in the media, who have launched yet another disinformation campaign aiming to drag Qatar into Israeli political disputes,” al-Ansari said.
He characterized the Israeli claims as “ridiculous and dangerous,” asserting that they fit within a broader, ongoing campaign against Qatar. This latest round of allegations comes in the aftermath of a military conflict involving Israel and Hamas, which significantly escalated on October 7, 2023.
Al-Ansari also noted that such accusations suggest an unfounded belief that Qatar exerts excessive influence over Israeli politics. “If these claims were to be believed, Qatar would apparently own all of Israel,” he remarked.
Preliminary results from the elections indicate that Netanyahu’s coalition did not achieve a majority in the Knesset. These results also revealed that Arab political parties secured a historic number of seats, although mainstream parties have signaled an unwillingness to partner with them.
In addition to the foreign ministry’s rebuttal, Dean Livine, acting director of Israel’s Central Elections Committee, affirmed the integrity of the electoral process. “The Knesset elections were conducted lawfully. The integrity of the elections at polling stations was rigorously safeguarded,” he stated in correspondence with a parliamentary colleague.
Al-Ansari criticized the recurrent focus on Qatar in Israeli political discussions, suggesting that some politicians should prioritize domestic issues instead. “They would be better off focusing on their own voters, improving people’s everyday lives, and undoing the damage they’ve created in the region,” he suggested.
Reiterating Qatar’s stance, al-Ansari emphasized that Doha has “no involvement” in Israel’s internal political disputes and will not accept any attempts to draw the nation into such matters.
Qatar continues to play a pivotal role as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has also been involved in facilitating communications between the United States and Iran. Al-Ansari stated that the recent allegations would not deter Qatar from its diplomatic and humanitarian efforts or its commitment to achieving regional stability and a just peace for the Palestinian people.
