‘It Is Purely Business’ – Mo Abudu Speaks On ‘Cabal’ In Nollywood Over Favoritism In Cinema Slots

Nigerian Media Executive Refutes Industry Cabal Allegations
Mo Abudu, a prominent Nigerian media executive, has denied allegations regarding the existence of cabals within the film industry. The claims suggest that certain Nollywood producers collaborate with cinema owners to restrict the screening of competing films.
Reports from Naija News indicate that some filmmakers have utilized social media to voice concerns that boxes are being manipulated, obstructing the public’s access to their movies. Additionally, audience members have alleged that cinema staff sometimes redirect patrons to alternative films, claiming their chosen movies are no longer available.
However, in an interview with ARISE Television on Saturday, Abudu asserted that the operations of cinemas are driven by market forces rather than favoritism. She emphasized that films with strong box office performance receive priority, explaining that cinema owners prioritize returns on investment.
“There is no cabal. This is not about sentiment or favoritism; it is about return on investment,” Abudu stated. “If a film cannot fill seats, it will be replaced no matter who owns it. Running air conditioning and paying staff in a nearly empty cinema is unsustainable. It is purely business.”
