‘It’s long overdue’ — CAN demands rescue of 78 abducted schoolchildren in Borno
Christian Association of Nigeria Calls for Urgent Action on Abducted Schoolchildren in Borno
Maiduguri, Nigeria – The Borno State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged authorities to take immediate action to rescue 78 schoolchildren and others who have been in captivity for over 100 days.
John Bakeni, the CAN Chairman, made the appeal during a prayer session on Sunday held to commemorate the organization’s 50th anniversary in Maiduguri. He expressed concern that the ongoing insecurity has overshadowed the celebration, as many residents continue to grapple with the dual challenges of violence and economic hardship.
“CAN is 50, and we have planned numerous events and activities. Unfortunately, our state-level celebration is a somber occasion,” Bakeni stated.
He emphasized that the association has been advocating for government attention on the plight of individuals held by kidnappers. “These kids have spent over 100 days in captivity. One can only imagine the pain and trauma experienced by their families,” he noted.
Bakeni called on the Federal Government, the Borno State Government, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to intensify their efforts in securing the release of those abducted. “This is a responsibility that lies with them,” he said. “We implore them to take decisive action, as it is long overdue.”
Despite the ongoing security challenges, Bakeni affirmed that CAN will continue to pray for peace and for the safe return of those in captivity.
According to reports, on May 16, 42 students and pupils were kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram militants during an attack on Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in the Askira-Uba Local Government Area. Subsequently, on June 29, an additional 36 students and one teacher were abducted from Government Day Secondary School in the same area, bringing the total number of those reported missing to 78.
