Nigerian Producer Addresses Criticism Over Kissing Scenes in Nollywood

Biodun Stephen, a prominent Nigerian film producer, recently commented on the responsibility of actors regarding their personal relationships amid criticism of kissing scenes in Nollywood films.

In an Instagram video, Stephen responded to concerns raised by critics who suggested that such intimate scenes could jeopardize actors’ marriages. She emphasized that both actors and their spouses are aware of the industry’s demands and must take ownership of their relationships.

Stephen argued that directors should not be held accountable for the challenges that arise in actors’ personal lives as a result of their roles. She made it clear that actors have the option to decline kissing scenes and noted that her primary responsibility lies in ensuring the professionalism of the filming process.

“There’s this lady who often critiques Nollywood,” Stephen said. “She raised a point about producers being considerate with actors and kissing scenes, suggesting we might be ruining their marriages.”

While Stephen stated that she prefers to create family-friendly content, she acknowledged the necessity of kissing scenes if they are essential to the storyline. “One of the things we sell to the audience is believability,” she explained. “You need to create an emotional connection so that viewers can root for the on-screen romance.”

Regarding the expectations surrounding intimate scenes, she remarked, “The responsibility lies with the actors who choose this profession, as well as with their spouses. They must understand that kissing and other forms of intimacy may occur.”

Stephen insisted that her role as a producer is to protect her actors during filming, not to interfere in their personal lives. “My job is to present you properly to the audience without compromising who you are,” she stated. “However, I cannot be held responsible for conflicts in your home life, because I did not force anyone to work for me.”
