JIBWIS leaders hand over 22-year-old suspect to police over viral video

Nigeria Police Arrest 22-Year-Old Man for Alleged Inciting Video

The Nigeria Police Force has apprehended a 22-year-old man from Zamfara State, identified as Umar Ibrahim Gandi Maradun, in connection with a viral video. The video reportedly features statements that police claim could incite religious violence.

CSP Ani Iniedu, the Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, indicating that the suspect is under investigation for the video’s content. The footage allegedly shows a young man in the uniform of Jama’atu Izalatil Bidi’a Wa’ikamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), making remarks deemed threatening to public peace and coexistence.

JIBWIS leaders at both the national and state levels have distanced the organization from the suspect’s actions and have cooperated with authorities by turning him over for further investigation.

The police have stated that if sufficient evidence is found to establish a charge, the suspect will be brought before a competent court. They also cautioned the public against sharing the video or circulating unverified claims that may exacerbate religious tensions.

“The Force will take appropriate lawful action against conduct capable of inciting religious hatred, provoking violence, or threatening public peace,” the statement added.
