Jigawa police arrest two over alleged vandalism of electricity installations

The police command has reported the arrest of two individuals in connection with separate incidents of vandalism involving public utilities.
Spokesperson SP Lawan Shiisu Adam announced on Wednesday that the suspects were detained for actions related to the destruction of a streetlight cable and an electricity transformer.
In the first incident, 38-year-old Aminu Musa, a streetlight generator operator from New Gwaram Town, was apprehended around 1:00 a.m. on September 25, 2026. Authorities accused him of cutting the armored cable of a streetlight in the area. Musa was taken into custody, and items recovered from the scene were held as evidence.
In a separate case, the police arrested 26-year-old Laminu Sha’aibu from Gumusuwa Village, Kafin Hausa Local Government Area, on September 29, 2026. He was allegedly found in possession of transformer coils after being suspected of vandalizing an electricity transformer in Maskangayu Village, Auyo Local Government Area. Authorities intervened following reports that an angry mob was threatening to attack Sha’aibu.
Shiisu reported that police officials transported the suspect to a nearby primary health center for medical attention after rescuing him from the mob. Following his recovery, he allegedly confessed during interrogation to dismantling the transformer over three nights without being detected.
Investigations are ongoing to clarify the events surrounding both incidents and to identify any additional suspects. Both individuals have been charged in court.
Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala commended the local community for their prompt reporting, which contributed to the arrests. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to public utilities, including streetlights and electrical installations. The commissioner reaffirmed the police command’s dedication to safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring accountability for acts of vandalism.
