Kaduna to establish Post Basic Nursing College in Rigasa

Governor Signs Bill for New Nursing College in Kaduna State
Kaduna, Nigeria — Governor Uba Sani has signed an Executive Bill to establish the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences in Rigasa, located in the Igabi Local Government Area. The new institution aims to address the shortage of specialist nurses and enhance medical services across the state.
In a statement released by Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, it was confirmed that the bill was signed on Wednesday as part of the Governor’s ongoing health sector reforms focused on developing skilled manpower.
The college is expected to expand training opportunities for advanced nursing, produce specialists in critical fields, and improve maternal and child care, emergency response, and intensive care services throughout Kaduna State.
Under the provisions of the Kaduna State College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences, Rigasa Law, 2026, the institution will function as a specialized tertiary training college, with its main campus situated in Rigasa. The law also allows for the establishment of additional campuses, schools, and training centers, pending regulatory approvals.
The college will offer programs in midwifery, psychiatric and mental health nursing, perioperative nursing, pediatric nursing, accident and emergency nursing, intensive care nursing, public health nursing, and healthcare administration.
Commissioner Maiyaki emphasized that the Governor’s approval of the bill signifies a major investment in developing a skilled workforce capable of addressing personnel shortages and enhancing clinical expertise within the healthcare sector.
In addition to professional training, the college is expected to promote research, continuous professional development, and partnerships with teaching hospitals, universities, and other accredited institutions.
The law establishes a Governing Council to guide the institution strategically and an Academic Board responsible for maintaining high standards in research and training. All programs will adhere to the accreditation and regulatory requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant authorities.
Maiyaki noted that this legislation is part of Governor Sani’s wider reform agenda, which includes upgrading 255 primary healthcare centers and rehabilitating 16 general hospitals and is aimed at bolstering workforce recruitment and development.
He stressed the importance of investing in both medical infrastructure and qualified professionals to effectively deliver specialized services, particularly in underserved communities. The establishment of the College of Post-Basic Nursing Sciences is expected to create a pool of specialist nurses, enhance institutional capacity, and contribute to improved health outcomes for future generations.
The statement also reiterated Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to developing the college into a center of excellence for specialist nursing education, research, and clinical training, furthering his vision for accessible, quality, and patient-centered medical services in Kaduna State.
