Kano govt suspends durbar processions, horse-riding activities over security concerns
KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government has announced the suspension of all Durbar processions and horse-riding activities in the Kano metropolis until further notice. This decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the State Security Council, held at the Government House.
In a statement released on Sunday, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Director-General of Media and Publicity for the Kano Government, explained that the suspension is a precautionary measure intended to prevent potential clashes, protect lives and property, and maintain public order.
Authorities have expressed concerns over significant mobilization of supporters related to the planned events, which raised alarms about possible confrontations and a breakdown of law and order.
“The State Security Council resolved to take precautionary measures to prevent any possible confrontation, preserve public order, and avoid any potential loss of lives or damage to property,” the statement read.
All relevant security agencies have been instructed to enforce this restriction and take appropriate legal action against anyone found violating the directive or engaging in activities that may threaten public peace and security.
The Kano State Government has appealed to residents, traditional institutions, political actors, and other stakeholders to remain calm and obey the directive fully. Officials reiterated their commitment to implementing necessary measures to safeguard lives and maintain peace throughout the state.
