Kano police nab wanted thug, ‘Sankolo’, over kidnapping, phone snatching

Kano State Police Arrest Suspected Thug Linked to Kidnapping and Theft

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Police Command has apprehended a 22-year-old man known as Abubakar Isma’il, or ‘Sankolo’, for alleged involvement in a series of criminal activities, including kidnapping and phone theft, in Rimin Kebe and its surrounding communities.

CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson, announced the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday. Isma’il was taken into custody on November 6 at approximately 9:30 p.m. by officers from the Zango Police Division during an operation in Rimin Kebe. His arrest was prompted by intelligence gathered following the capture of another suspect, Umar Usman, also known as ‘Ta’ambo’, the previous day.

Kiyawa indicated that Isma’il is a key suspect in the kidnapping of nine-year-old Ubaidu Sammani, who was abducted on July 3, 2026, and has been sought for his alleged involvement in thuggery within the area. Several of his alleged accomplices are currently facing charges in court.

“The arrest followed discreet investigations and actionable intelligence obtained after the earlier arrest of ‘Ta’ambo’ on November 5,” Kiyawa said.

Initial investigations have reportedly revealed Isma’il’s participation in numerous cases of thuggery and mobile phone robberies in Rimin Kebe and adjacent neighborhoods. He has reportedly admitted to orchestrating attacks, intimidating residents, and stealing mobile phones and other valuables.

Community leaders and residents welcomed the arrest, expressing gratitude for the police action. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori commended the officers from Zango Division for their professionalism and prompt response to the situation.

Isma’il remains in custody as investigations proceed, and efforts are underway to apprehend additional members of his gang and recover stolen items and weapons tied to the crimes. The police stated that Isma’il would be charged in court following the completion of a thorough investigation.

Authorities are encouraging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or the designated emergency numbers.
