Kano prepares for possible Ebola outbreak, trains health workers

The Kano State Government has initiated a training program for health workers and implemented measures to prepare for a potential Ebola outbreak. Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures against the disease.

Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, the Commissioner for Health, made this announcement on Friday in Kano. He emphasized that the state already has a response and preparedness framework in place, established well before Ebola was reported in Nigeria.

Kano’s status as a significant commercial hub, attracting visitors from various global regions, necessitates robust disease surveillance and emergency response systems, Yusuf noted. “As an international commercial center where diverse people converge daily for trade, we must be prepared,” he stated.

The commissioner highlighted that the government has enhanced monitoring at critical entry points, including the international airport, bus stations, major highways, and border areas, to help detect and prevent the possible entry and spread of Ebola.

He also mentioned that health workers have been trained to handle suspected cases and respond effectively to public health emergencies. The Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) has the necessary facilities and systems in place to manage any potential cases that may arise.

“We have the KNCDC and the requisite facilities for managing such cases, although we express hope that we will not encounter any victims,” Yusuf remarked.

He advised residents to exercise caution in crowded places, particularly in areas frequented by travelers and visitors. personal hygiene, including regular handwashing and the use of hand sanitizer after contact with others, is crucial, he added.

Yusuf reassured the public that the government will continue to monitor health threats and bolster emergency response measures to safeguard the community throughout the state.
