KATSINA, Nigeria — Chinedu Ozor, a defender for Katsina United, has reportedly shown signs of life after being taken to a mortuary, following an initial announcement of his death.
Ozor, who recently joined the Katsina-based club, collapsed during a pre-season friendly match against Niger Tornadoes FC at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Tuesday. Following the incident, he was declared dead due to a medical emergency, prompting the club to express condolences to his family and loved ones.
However, reports emerged later that evening when grassroots sports journalist Prince CJ shared on social media that Ozor exhibited movement while at the mortuary. According to Prince CJ, the player was quickly transported back to the hospital, where he is currently receiving oxygen and further medical care.
“Reliable sources say Chinedu Ozor has been moved from the mortuary to the hospital after reportedly showing signs of movement. He is currently on oxygen as medics work to revive him,” Prince CJ stated in a video on Facebook. He also called for prayers for the footballer, expressing hope for his recovery.
Despite the earlier confirmation of Ozor’s death by Katsina United, the new developments have rekindled hope for his survival. As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the club or the hospital regarding his current condition.
In light of the tragic incident, Katsina United had previously referred to it as a loss for the club and expressed deep sorrow over the situation. “We mourn the tragic passing of our newly signed player, Ozor Chinedu, following a medical emergency during today’s friendly match against Niger Tornadoes FC,” the club stated earlier in the day.
