Kebbi steps up Ebola screening at airport, land borders

The Kebbi State Government is intensifying its efforts to prevent the potential entry and transmission of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) by enhancing health surveillance and screening protocols at critical entry points throughout the state.

Dr. Zaki Abubakar Zaki, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, announced these measures in a statement issued on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi. He outlined that the ministry’s Public Health Department has increased screening activities at Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, as well as at selected land border crossings.

“Passengers arriving at and departing from Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport are being screened at designated gates to facilitate early detection of suspected Ebola cases and to identify travelers exhibiting symptoms consistent with the disease,” Dr. Zaki stated.

In addition to airport measures, similar protocols have been implemented at three land border entry points located in Bagudo, Kamba, and Arewa local government areas. Dr. Zaki emphasized that these initiatives aim to quickly identify suspected cases and ensure affected individuals receive further medical evaluation. He noted that necessary public health measures will be taken to mitigate the risk of transmission.

The ministry has also provided personal protective equipment to general hospitals across Kebbi State to bolster their readiness for any potential Ebola cases. The state government reiterated its dedication to safeguarding residents through effective disease surveillance, border screening, and collaboration with relevant health authorities and organizations.

Officials are urging residents and travelers to stay vigilant, cooperate with health personnel, and report any symptoms that may be associated with Ebola to the appropriate authorities promptly.
