Kwara APC crisis deepens, gov’s camp storms Abuja party headquarters Monday

Crisis Erupts in Kwara State APC as Governor’s Team Heads to Abuja

The rift within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State is escalating, prompting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and his supporters to travel to the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Monday. They seek a resolution regarding the controversy surrounding the nomination of Speaker Yakubu Danladi Salihu as the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 general elections.

This visit follows a formal complaint to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by ten gubernatorial aspirants who have expressed opposition to the recent primary election that appointed Salihu as the APC’s candidate.

Previously, members of the party’s elders’ caucus, led by Chief James Bamisaiye, along with several aspirants, rejected Salihu’s candidacy, claiming it was a result of endorsement from Governor AbdulRazaq. They are calling for intervention from the party’s national leadership.

The delegation from Kwara, led by Prince Sunday Fagbemi, the state party chairman, includes notable figures such as former PDP Secretary Razaq Lawal and Abdullateef Alakawa, Chairman of the Niger River Basin Development Authority.

Sources indicate that this influential group aims to present the governor’s perspective to the ruling party’s key decision-making bodies. To maintain confidentiality, the delegation has arranged to travel by chartered flight from Ilorin, reportedly departing early Monday morning.

The governor’s team is expected to engage with the APC’s national chairman and the National Working Committee (NWC). Additionally, consultations are planned with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to garner support regarding the political turmoil facing the party.

Supporters of Governor AbdulRazaq maintain that the APC remains united and capable of overcoming internal conflicts. However, political analysts and critics contend that these recent events reveal significant fractures within the party’s organization in Kwara State.
